Mental illness is real, common and treatable: No one knows that better than Patty Duke. The Academy Award-winning actress will share her real-life experiences with manic depression and bipolar disorder in a unique Quad Cities event: The Vera French Foundation Luncheon Lecture Series on Wednesday, May 21.
Past president of the Screen Actors Guild, best-selling author and mental illness survivor, Ms. Duke will be the keynote speaker at our first-ever Luncheon Lecture Series. She’ll focus on her battle with mental illness (which she discussed on Oprah Winfrey Show in October). She is the author of A Brilliant Madness: Living with Manic Depression Illness (1992) and a biography, Call Me Anna (1987). She has worked as a spokeswoman for the National Institute of Mental Health and is regarded as a highly visible and effective advocate for mental health issues.
The Vera French Foundation Luncheon Lecture Series has been launched as a service to the community during Mental Health Month, which is observed in May. Events like this are an important way for us to expand awareness about mental health issues, and expand support for programs that benefit local people of every age and every walk of life.
Since 1949, Vera French has helped improve the lives of children in need, adults in crisis and those with persistent mental illness. Each year more than 13,000 people are touched by our services. As our community grows, so does the need for mental health services.
We hope you’ll join us at the luncheon, which will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21 at the Rogalski Center, St. Ambrose University, Davenport. The lecture series is sponsored by Vera French Foundation, Genesis Health System and Quad City Times. Seating is limited: for tickets, call the Vera French Foundation at (563) 888-6268. All proceeds will remain in this area, supporting the work of the Vera French Community Mental Health Center in helping local people.
